April 18, 2017
Tuesday, police were there trying to find out who stole a spiritual item from this place of worship. The Tabernacle was stolen under the administration of Father Andrew Pavlak.
On April 25th, 2017, the stolen tabernacle from Gasparri Chapel was returned to the parish with minor damage. The tabernacle is now bolted to the shelf it is placed on. There is no definitive information regarding who stole the tabernacle and who returned it.
This is a short video of a procession for the Feast of Corpus Christi from the Old Town Gazebo into the Catholic San Felipe de Neri Church.
On June 10th, 2012 The Corpus Christi possession was started with the evening mass at Immaculate conception in Down Town Albuquerque and had a possession back to the mother church of the City. The possession was organized by Father Denis Garcia (pastor of San Felipe at the time) and Father Patrick J. Hough, S.J. (a recently ordained priest assigned as an assistant at Immaculate Conception Parish).
A possession like this had not been realized since the 1950’s when Archbishop Edwin V. Byrne (Archbishop of Santa Fe from 1943-1963) had presided over the procession every year.
On December 1st, 2011, the historic cottonwood tree that stood behind the San Felipe Church and had a carving of Our Lady of Guadalupe inside was toppled by Thursday night's winds.
The image of the Virgen of Guadalupe was carved by a parishioner, Toby (Toribio) Avila. Toby carved the image as an act of thanksgiving for having survived both the Korean and the Vietnam Wars. He died shortly after carving the image of a diabetic coma. All he used to carve into the tree was a butterknife and a hammer.
The trunk of the tree now sits on the southeast side of the parish property looking out to the main plaza. The trunk was moved to its current location, at the request of Father Denis Garcia, due to safety concern.
The tree was repainted in February of 2022 by Mark Samudio, a parishioner and a Knight of Columbus, at the request of Father Gabriel Gomez, S.F. the acting Parish Administrator
The pictures that are posted of the tree, were provided by Toby’s daughter.
