In April 2004, architects Ortega &
Associates presented the San Felipe de Neri community with the
results of their Master Plan Study. Many of the suggested repairs
and improvements have been made in the church and convent. Other
repairs and improvement to parish facilities will continue as funds
allow. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
The following summaries refer to the drawing at
the right (for a larger view, click on the image).
A. Nave Repair brick floor
or replace with wood. Repaint. Install new pews and widen
aisles. New altar, ambo, and presider's chair Relocate
Bicentennial Reredos to Gaspari Chapel. Restore "side
altars." Relocate confessionals and close recent
opening Repair choir loft stairs and guardrail.
B. Gaspari Chapel Redesign
as a private prayer chapel. Reset Bicentennial Reredos as altar
backdrop. Use as overflow seating for Holy Days (video feed
from church)
D. Sacristies Relocate
museum to convent and use the resulting space for priests' and
ministers' sacristies.
E. Vestibule Convert
existing sacristy into vestibule, which may be used for overflow
seating on Holy Days.
G. Shrine This room is
unique because the original roof structure is exposed and shows the
original construction of the church before the "Greek and
Victorian" modifications of the 19th century.
I. Museum / Gift Shop /
Library Repair the roof and wall structures of the
convent. Use the space for an expanded museum, gift shop, and
library for historical documents. Rooms on the second floor could
be designed for offices or meeting spaces.
L. Main
Courtyard Reconstruct the unsound portal. Provide
xeric landscaping, with a large area surfaced for parish
activities. Remove most of the low wall to provide free
access. Provide security gates.
M. Moreno Hall Refurbish the
meeting space. Remodel the kitchen to code compliant
standards. Convert adjacent offices to accessible restrooms and
bride/comfort room. Equip with video connections to broadcast
service from main church.
N. Granero Repair the
structure and configure for offices or meeting rooms.
O. Rectory Repair the
structure and upgrade the mechanical and electrical
systems. Consider providing an off-site residence for the
priests, and convert the entire rectory to administrative
facilities.
